The year 2000. Four experienced saboteurs from Afghanistan are trying to reach Germany through the Caucasus and Moscow. Their goal is to carry out a terrorist attack in Germany on a scale the world has never seen before. They plan to spend six years preparing an explosion at the Cologne stadium during one of the matches of the World Cup. Moscow writer Balashov had never written about terrorists or war. His characters come from the Soviet intelligentsia of the 1980s, lost in the Russian 1990s. Suddenly, he receives a lucrative offer to write a book about the Soviet-Afghan war. This opens the door to a world of new people for him, and his life intersects with the path of the saboteurs. The novel "Kabul - Caucasus" was completed in the summer of 2001, just a few weeks before the September 11th terrorist attack. It is not a detective story or a thriller. In the early 2000s, critics called it an explosive novel. They compared it to anti-war novels by Remarque, investigative books by Forsyth, and even with Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace." In reality, "Kabul - Caucasus" is the first book of the trilogy "The Century of the Assassin," a genre that, at least in Russian prose, has not yet received its name. The publisher "Veche" is also preparing the first edition of the second part of the novel, continuing the story of the characters from "Kabul - Caucasus."
