Have you ever swum across the ocean? And on a raft made of balsa logs, on which Polynesians made sea voyages thousands of years ago? Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl (1914–2002) invites us on exactly such an expedition. And if you are not afraid to push off from the coast of South America and embark on a search for adventure, then you have the right book in your hands. We wish you fair winds and incredible discoveries!
About the author:
THOR HEYERDAHL (1914–2002) was a Norwegian archaeologist, traveler, and writer.
Heyerdahl's inspiration for rafting across the Pacific Ocean came from ancient chronicles and drawings by Spanish conquistadors depicting Inca rafts, as well as local legends and archaeological evidence suggesting possible contacts between South America and Polynesia.
In 1947, Heyerdahl and five other adventurers—Knut Haugland, Bengt Danielsson, Erik Hesselberg, Torstein Raaby, and Herman Watzinger—arrived in Peru, where they built a raft called "Kon-Tiki" out of balsa wood and other natural materials.
They set sail into the Pacific Ocean on April 28, and on August 7, after 102 days at sea, their raft, which had covered 4,300 nautical miles (8,000 km), washed ashore on the reefs of the Raroia atoll in the Tuamotu Islands.
"Kon-Tiki" demonstrated that a primitive raft, using the Humboldt Current and favorable winds, could indeed cross the Pacific Ocean relatively easily and safely in a westward direction.
Inspired by the voyage of "Kon-Tiki," many others repeated this journey on their own rafts. Thor Heyerdahl's book "Kon-Tiki" has been translated into more than 70 languages worldwide. The documentary film about the expedition, filmed by Heyerdahl and his companions during the voyage, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1952.
About the translator:
LEV LVOVICH ZHDANOV (1924–1995) was a third-generation writer and translator. In the early 20th century, his grandfather Lev Grigorievich Zhdanov (1854–1951) gained great fame for his historical novels, and his father, Lev Shiffers, was also a prose writer and translator. Lev Zhdanov spent his childhood in Norway.
He participated in the Great Patriotic War and witnessed its end in Berlin. The translator made his literary debut in 1955 when his translation of Thor Heyerdahl's book "Journey to 'Kon-Tiki'" was published in the magazine "Yunost." Throughout his life, Lev Zhdanov translated over 150 books from English, Norwegian, Swedish, and other languages. Thanks to him, Russian readers were introduced to the works of writers such as Roald Amundsen, Bengt Danielsson, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Yngvar Lindblad, Gerald Durrell, Clifford D. Simak, Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, and others.
