In June 1793, the Jacobins came to power in France - a faction of the most radical revolutionaries. This marked the beginning of the era of total terror, which lasted for thirteen months. Its inspirers and ideologists are usually referred to as Jean-Paul Marat and Maximilien Robespierre. Revolutionary tribunals throughout the country handed down 17,000 death sentences. The total number of victims of the Jacobin terror is estimated at 35-40 thousand people. Around half a million were sent to prison, and around 300 thousand were placed under house arrest.
