The relations of Byzantium with its neighbors were never simple: alliances were replaced by enmity, trade would either flourish or decline. The emergence of a new state to the north of the western border of the Great Steppe was no exception: the first centuries of this coexistence were filled with ambiguous events, which to this day remain unclear to us, leaving unresolved questions and sparking fierce disputes.
