The stories of three famous kings under one cover. Each of them reached the edge in their own way... and someone even crossed it.
John (1167-1216), nicknamed Lackland. He was a failure, disliked by everyone, especially after the reign of his noble brother Richard the Lionheart. He lost two major wars: with the French - losing half of his possessions, and with his own subjects - losing almost half of his royal power. He was the king who signed the prototype of modern constitutions - the Magna Carta.
Edward (1312-1377), a hero and lucky one, nicknamed the Third. He started the Hundred Years' War with France, defeated the cream of French nobility in several glorious battles, and his reign was called the 'golden age' of English history.
Richard (1367-1400) could probably have been called the Danish Prince if Hamlet had been written two hundred years earlier. He lost his father early, first depended on his mother and old advisors, and then relied on his friends of the same age, who betrayed him, overthrew him, and killed him in prison. They say he was an impulsive and irritable handsome man, but not as neurotic as the brilliant playwright portrayed him.
Following Shakespeare, Alexandra Marinina tried to understand the biographies and psychological portraits of these rulers. And how does she conclude her book? 'Truly royal hypocrisy!' Why? You can find out about it from the fascinating and witty historical essays.
