The book about a vanished life, "Jews as Jews," first published in 1935, is considered the pinnacle of the work of the famous writer Yeshua Perle (1888–1943), who perished in the Birkenau concentration camp. Through the perspective of an autobiographical hero, a twelve-year-old boy named Mendel, the author narrates with utmost sincerity, sometimes harshly, naturalistically about life in a Polish provincial town at the end of the 19th century. The book was awarded the Bund and the Jewish PEN Club prizes in Poland. Originally published in Yiddish, it was issued four times, and this is the first time it is being published in Russian translation.
