In the Livonian War there were two main actors - the Polish king Stefan Batorium and Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible. From their worldviews, personal qualities, the relationship of the subjects depended on the success of the parties in the confrontation. The result is known: the war has exhausted the forces of the Moscow kingdom, while the Commonwealth concludes turned into a strongest state in the east of Europe. The book of Witold Novodvorsky is based primarily on Polish sources. The author clearly sympathizes the Polish side, does not miss the case of saying the cruelty of Ivan the Terrible and unsightly sides of Russian life and at the same time almost always finds words to justify any actions of the war of Stephen Batory, it is elected in the evaluation of the episodes of the Livonian War with N.M. Karamzin and S.M. Solovyov. But this is what his book is interesting. It is always useful to look at the events in an unexpected perspective, especially since the reader offers many details that cannot be found from outstanding Russian historians
