For Soviet people, the collapse of the socialist system was both an absolute surprise and something quite predictable. This dramatic event revealed an unusual paradox: despite the fact that most people perceived the Soviet system as eternal and unchanging, they were fundamentally always prepared for its collapse. In the book by Professor Alexei Yurchak of the University of California, Berkeley, the "late socialism" system (mid-1950s to mid-1980s) is analyzed from the perspective of this paradox. The image of late socialism presented in the book fundamentally differs from the familiar stereotypes, according to which Soviet reality can be reduced to a description based on simple oppositions: official/unofficial culture, totalitarian language/free language, political suppression/civil resistance, public lies/hidden truth. The book was awarded the "Enlightener" prize for 2015. 7th edition.
