The textbook addresses and discusses the issue of the uniqueness of literary science and its difference from natural sciences. It presents a kind of "history of the question": from Vico's "new science," Kant's and Hegel's views, Dilthey's concept of humanitarian knowledge, to the theories of the 20th century - Gadamer's hermeneutics and the views of formalists, structuralists, and postmodernists. The work traces the history of the global contradiction between two directions of literary science: "humanitarian" ("traditional") and "scientistic." An analysis is given of the main categories of opposing concepts of science: "forms," "contents," "ideas," "ideals," on one hand, and "discourse," "text," "writing" on the other. In contrast to the currently accepted academic, neutral style of presentation that does not evaluate conflicting theories, the author takes the side of one of the theories - "traditional" literary studies. Such textbooks are needed as much as those in which authors refrain from evaluating the concepts they analyze and help students take their own well-thought-out position and avoid indifferent eclecticism. For university students studying humanities.
