The textbook covers all sections of the disciplines 'Demography', 'Demography and Population Statistics'. The object, subject, and principles of demographic research are discussed: longitudinal and cross-sectional analysis methods, the use of statistical methods as a condition for revealing the regularities of demographic processes. The importance and methods of calculating the population size, analyzing the dynamics and composition of the population by gender, age, place of residence, education, etc. are considered. The issues arising during the census and the stages of transitioning to a data source such as the population register are particularly detailed. The significance of demographic balance is emphasized. The methods of studying fertility, mortality, family structure of the population, marriage and divorce processes are presented. When considering migration, emphasis is placed on the scales and directions of population movement, as well as on the sources of data on both internal and external migration. Attention is drawn to the specificity of forecasting demographic processes: the use of scenario approaches, probabilistic methods. All trends in demographic processes are integrated within the framework of dominant demographic concepts. The practical significance of demography and population statistics for the development of insurance, the dissemination of increasingly diverse methods of demographic policy, and the organization of anti-epidemic measures are discussed.
In the title of the book, the authors sought to emphasize the complexity of modern methods of demographic research, the fact that no textbook, especially one aimed at the undergraduate level, is able to encompass all theories and methods of analysis. This is an introductory course, mastering which, a student can move on to more complex methods. However, the authors consider it possible to use this textbook by those who are studying in graduate school and are interested in knowledge of demography and population statistics.
For students in the fields of 'Demography', 'Economics', 'Management', 'Sociology', 'Russian Regional Studies', 'International Regional Studies', as well as for employees of state and municipal authorities.
