A well-known journalist and recipient of several awards for human rights activism has embodied her impressions of the fates of people serving sentences in Russian prisons in a series of novellas-parables. Each one is based on real events. Eva Merkacheva's "Chamber Reports" can be traced back to Nekrasov's "Petersburg Corners," to the texts of Pomyalovsky, Korolenko, and Chekhov. Following in the footsteps of her great predecessors, the writer reveals to the reader the "invisible tears of the world," the everyday life, customs, and collisions of one of the most closed spheres of modern society that frightens many. She also explores the manifestations of human nature in extreme circumstances. The core of each novella is the character of the protagonist, their choices, sometimes unexpected. But the author always leaves hope for her hero. The belief in the triumph of the best in a person, wherever they may be, permeates all the texts in the collection. How does the domestic penitentiary system affect the prisoners: do they heal their souls in correctional facilities or lose faith in Good and Truth forever? The characters in the works are faced with a choice: either to show the best human qualities in difficult circumstances, or to continue blaming others for everything, but never themselves... Lost or found love, bright sadness about the past, the torment of conscience for what has been done, and the purifying heart of repentance brighten their tiresome, endlessly gray days.
