Saint Cyril of Alexandria (375-444) was a great holy father of the Orthodox Church, who became famous primarily for his doctrinal achievements in the field of Christology and refutation of the Nestorian heresy in 429-431. However, the scope of his activities was much broader, and he is also known as a profound exegete of the Holy Scriptures. Among his New Testament exegetical works, the most famous is the "Commentary on the Gospel of John," which is presented to the reader. This work was presumably written before 429 and consists of 12 books, in which, in addition to interpreting this "mystical" Evangelist and explaining the deep mysteries of the Divine Plan of salvation and the Incarnation, the saint polemicizes with various heresies. This commentary, a masterpiece of ancient church patristic exegesis, was translated into Russian by the renowned domestic church scholar-biblicist, Professor Mitrofan Dmitrievich Muretov (1851-1917) of the Moscow Spiritual Academy.
