What makes these works relevant? Perhaps it is because the characters so brilliantly described by Gogol - corrupt lazy officials, provincial upstarts and their daughters awkwardly aspiring to metropolitan chic, timid grooms unwilling to part with their bachelor ways, and spirited matchmakers - are often encountered by us even now? The collection also includes the play "The Gamblers."
