Throughout the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, Russia lived in anticipation of inevitable changes - the restructuring of state and social life on fair principles.

The book by Bryacheslav Galimov presents scenes from Russian life during this period. The book begins with the dramatic circumstances that followed the writing of P.Ya. Chaadaev's 'Philosophical Letters' with a sharp assessment of the existing political system in Russia, as a result of which Chaadaev was declared insane and placed under house arrest, while the recipient of his letters was mutilated in a mental institution.

It then shows a meeting of the Narodnaya Volya members led by Sofia Perovskaya on the eve of the assassination of Alexander II, the arrest of N.G. Chernyshevsky, a search at Yasnaya Polyana at L.N. Tolstoy's estate, and the arrest of his personal secretary, the flight abroad in 1917 of representatives of the Russian nobility, and the famous story of the 'Naryshkin treasure'.

In the post-revolutionary period, episodes are presented such as the staging by V. Meyerhold with the participation of K. Malevich and V. Mayakovsky of the play 'Mystery-Bouffe' on the first anniversary of the October Revolution, and V.I. Lenin's visit to the communes of avant-garde artists in Moscow in 1921, which marked the end of the policy of 'war communism'.

In the Stalin era, the author recounts two events: the execution of left-wing SRs in the Oryol prison in September 1941 and the death of I.V. Stalin in March 1953, providing a retrospective of the lives of the main characters in both episodes, and in the case of Stalin, essentially his biography.

It should be noted that by depicting the atmosphere and moods of various circles of Russian society in each case, B. Galimov provides unique historical details in his book, which is written in a vivid and lively language.
