Ivan Shipnigov (b. 1987) is a screenwriter, writer, author of the novel "Stream" and the collection of stories "Oil, Blizzard, and Other Merry Gods." He is a laureate of the "Moscow Art Prize" and a finalist of literary awards such as "Yasnaya Polyana," "NOS," and "National Bestseller."
In his new book "Incomprehensible Novel," there are two plotlines. In one, the protagonist gives an interview to a fictional YouTube blogger, and in the other, he searches for treasure with a friend in a forest near Moscow at night. The drunken interview without editing becomes a space of nostalgia for the years 2017-2019 when rappers came to the fictional YouTube blogger and talked about girls and creativity, while the romantic walk turns into a psychedelic trip where the initial goal is quickly lost, and the main task becomes returning home.
"Incomprehensible Novel" is a journey into oneself in the genre of autofiction, an attempt to hide from the roaring 2020s "in a little house" made of real family values. It is a farewell to youth, acceptance of sobriety, and confession of love.
"Ivan Shipnigov surprises: unexpected plot twists, paradoxical thinking, genuine wit that does not turn into vulgar humor. The new prose format that Shipnigov creates is captivating and unsettling. But the main thing is the effect of recognition. You read and constantly catch yourself that this and that happened to you, that you acted and thought the same way... I am sure that many, upon discovering 'Incomprehensible Novel,' will find something familiar in it. Everything eventually becomes clear. And it is cleansingly sad." - Roman Senchin
"'Do you notice how coming to Moscow is considered a salvation from all troubles for us? If things are bad for you somewhere - and they are usually bad everywhere - then you should go to Moscow, and everything will be fine there. I can imagine how you, old Muscovites, don't like us, coming endlessly from our villages to seek salvation in Moscow. Although I live in Moscow as if in a village anyway...'"
