Ninety years ago, in the summer of 1933, the steamship "Chelyuskin" set out on its first and, as it turned out, final voyage. The goal of the expedition - to traverse the Northern Sea Route in a single navigation season - was not achieved, as the ship was crushed by ice and sank on February 13, 1934, in the Chukchi Sea. The loss of the "Chelyuskin," the evacuation of people from the ice, and the awarding of the title of Hero of the Soviet Union - these events became one of the most vivid pages in the history of the country in the 20th century. However, official historiography was heavily distorted in favor of ideology: some heroes were glorified, while others were carefully hidden in the shadows.
Despite the abundance of publications, there is no chronological description of the Chelyuskin epic. The book "In the Shadow of the First Heroes" is the story of the rescue operation, a narrative about all its heroes, including those unknown to the general public. The conclusions drawn in the book may seem controversial to many readers, but the author presented his version of the events based on the memories of the participants and a solid documentary foundation.
