The book represents the first monographic study in Russian historiography dedicated to the history of the restoration of the reformed Church of England in the early years of Queen Elizabeth Tudor's reign. The religious policy and system of church governance from the late 1550s to the mid-1570s are examined through the prism of the activities of the primate of the Church of England - Archbishop of Canterbury Matthew Parker. Analyzing his views on his tasks and the church ideal, his relationship with the queen and her entourage, his interaction with the clergy, parliament, and convocation, as well as his conflicts with opponents and participation in religious disputes, the author shows how the powers were distributed between secular authority and the episcopate and what was the mechanism for decision-making in religious policy issues. The study of these topics provides grounds for conclusions about the role played by the higher clergy of the English Church in implementing state policy in the everyday practice of church life and, more broadly, the ways in which the Reformation was carried out in England.
The book is addressed to historians, political scientists, religious scholars, as well as anyone interested in the history of England in the second half of the 16th century.
