In 1904, the doctor Vikentiy Veresaev was called up for military service, assigned to a field mobile hospital, and sent to the east. He witnessed the battle on the Sha River, the Battle of Mukden, and the peace negotiations. From the first days, Veresaev plunged into the bloody chaos of the fighting, witnessing the incompetence and indifference of commanders and officers, as well as the heroism of ordinary soldiers. Working in inhumane conditions, Veresaev and other doctors and interns saved the lives of the wounded and sick passing through their hands. "In the Japanese War" is an honest, candid account, written in the heat of the moment, by an ordinary military doctor.
