In 2022, it has been 100 years since the birth of Alexey Leonidovich Kats (1922-1978), a brilliant and authoritative historian, researcher of the social life of Ancient Rome, and its most important ideological currents - Manichaeism and Neoplatonism (among competing philosophical schools, he personally sympathized most with Epicurus and his followers). Extensive memories of A. Kats begin with images of his pre-war Moscow childhood, spent in the famous artists' settlement of Sokol. Already in his school years, his interest in theater and extraordinary acting abilities emerged. Despite losing his father early, who was arrested in 1934 under Article 58, he still entered the history faculty of Moscow State University and successfully completed the first year. On June 23, 1941, he passed an excellent exam on the history of Ancient Rome to his future mentor A.G. Bokshanin. The author's memories of the historical faculty of Moscow State University over 30 years are an important historical source and occupy a large part of his manuscripts being published for the first time. His direct perception of the educational process, communication with teachers, student life, personal acquaintance with the leading representatives of Soviet historical science are of great interest. Academic activities were interrupted by the war. First-year students were sent to dig trenches, where they established friendly relationships with future renowned historians such as Pavel Volobuev, Julian Bromley, Mikhail Gefter, and others. During the hostilities, A.L. Kats served as a military scout, due to his extraordinary abilities, quickly advanced and ended the war in Hungary with the rank of senior lieutenant, a recipient of two combat orders, and a military translator of the intelligence department of the 40th Army headquarters. Upon returning to Moscow, A.L. Kats completed his education, defended his candidate dissertation, and was assigned to Kyrgyzstan, where he continued to maintain close scientific and creative ties with his colleagues in Moscow and Leningrad.
