Princess Olga Alexandrovna Shcherbatova dedicated to traveling for almost twenty years of his life. Together with her husband, Prince A.G. Shcherbatov, president of the Imperial Moscow Society of Agriculture, she visited the Arab East, India, Ceylon, Singapore, Indonesia, crossed almost all Java. The result of these travels became its unique books.
The book "in the country of volcanoes" was published in 1897. Thanks to her the property of Russian readers of the late XIX century, many, previously unknown, information about the national character, life, ineffs, the customs of people inhabiting the archipelago and his main island - Java were steel.
The Russian Princess diligently studied the Malay language and could communicate, although not without difficulty, with the local population, which helped her even better understand the peculiarities of this amazing region.
O.A. Shcherbatova perfectly owned by the Russian language and possessed undoubted literary talent and its travel impressions are called in the memory of "Fregat Pallada" I.A. Goncharov, published by several decades earlier.
When preparing a book to reprint, the literary style of the author is completely preserved, only spelling touched the clarification. The editors prepared a list and translation of the Malay words found in the text, name pointers and geographical names, bibliography.
