A withdrawn young man, spending his time reading books and perceiving his parental home as an unwanted environment, constructs his illusory parallel world where the ordinariness of life is replaced by the brilliance of an imagined future reality. Harsh reality confronts him with various people, whose fates are presented as separate novellas. All the characters in the novel seem to overlay beautiful pictures on top of reality, becoming hostages of their illusions. Like the Little Prince once tired of loneliness sets out to find his planet until he finds Earth, where he meets the Snake, the Fox, and the Aviator in the desert, the hero of the narrative also leaves his home to explore worlds and find his planet in a direct and precise sense - he tries to become an astronomer, moves to Leningrad, enters graduate school, and works at an observatory. His pursuit of success at any cost leads him to a life crisis and scientific inadequacy, he commits fraud, turning into a cynical dealer, a copy of the "businessman" from "The Little Prince," who constantly counted the stars, believing that his wealth depended on their quantity. The young man did not know the advice of the wise Fox, that to find his planet, it is not necessary to search for it in the sky: "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
