In the early 1930s. About six and a half thousand Finns moved from the USA and Canada to Soviet Karelia. The republic, where at that time there was an active economic and national construction, experienced an acute shortage of labor, and qualified workers and specialists from North America were extremely in demand in various industries, construction, agriculture and culture. Wanting to help the construction of socialism, immigrants brought with them not only knowledge and skills, but also cars, tools, currency, their contribution to the modernization of the economy and culture of Soviet Karelia is difficult to overestimate. Despite this, many of them were arrested and shot during the Stalinist repressions or sent to forced labor in the NKVD labor armies during the Great Patriotic War.
