The poem 'In Memoriam A.-G. H. Obiit MDCCCXXXIII' (1850) is recognized as the pinnacle achievement of Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892) - a poet in whom the English saw and continue to see the symbol of the Victorian era, and the Pre-Raphaelites - their predecessor (such a strong influence his work had on them). Queen Victoria called 'In Memoriam' her favorite work and confessed that, apart from the Bible, only this poem gave her consolation after the death of her husband. Formally representing a powerful requiem for a dearly loved and untimely deceased friend, in reality, the poem is much more multifaceted and deeper. Saturated with biblical images and allusions, rich in reminiscences from Renaissance poetry, Petrarch, Shakespeare, English metaphysical poets, and romantics, it is the fruit of many years of spiritual and literary work. At first glance, the structure of the poem seems fragmentary, but in reality, it is tightly connected and ascends - according to the author's plan - to Dante's 'Divine Comedy'. 'In Memoriam' is a monumental creation, filled with life wisdom expressed in simple, resonant, and deeply memorable words; it is no wonder that it has become widely quoted and has generated as many aphorisms in England as 'Woe from Wit' has in Russia. The poem retrospectively presents the entire spectrum of complex relationships between two young men - the addressee of the poem and its author. Delicate lyricism is combined with spiritual depth, and the bitterness of losing a sole friend becomes a guiding star through the thorns of life, through pain and nightmarish dreams, over the howling abysses of the firmament, through the swamp of melancholy and disbelief - to acceptance, reassessment, and realization that 'to love and lose love | Is still better than never to have known love'. Raising a countless number of 'eternal questions' and seeking answers to them in various religious currents and beliefs (the idea of reincarnation, pantheism, the World Soul, etc.), in depth of thought it is comparable to a philosophical treatise, and in the power of feeling - to the most penetrating lyrical confession. It is no wonder that T.S. Eliot admiringly noted that 'In Memoriam' is 'a poignant diary every word of which we must necessarily read'. In the 'Additions' section, a retrospective selection of Tennyson's best works is presented, allowing a glimpse into the poet's creative laboratory, expanding the horizons of perception of his great poem: 'Enoch Arden' - 'an honest old story about fishermen' (I.A. Bunin), simple and yet filled with evangelical depth, the idyll 'The Holy Grail' - key from the grand cycle about King Arthur, and finally, selected lyrics, both known to the Russian-speaking reader and translated for the first time. The edition is equipped with detailed articles, richly illustrated, and addressed to all lovers of classical poetry.
