The book is the first part of the memoirs of the commander of the 11th Infantry Pskov Regiment, M.V. Grulev, about the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. The central place in them is occupied by the description of the Battle of Liaoyang, which significantly differs from the official reports of the Russian command. The narrative of the events of the war is preceded by an analysis of its causes and the state of the armed forces of the opposing sides, based on the author's personal impressions from pre-war trips to the Far East and his stay in Japan as a military agent (attaché).
