Masha Traub has a rare talent - to convey the feelings of the characters in such a way that the reader experiences them together with them, sympathizes with them, and tries to understand them, even if they think differently. "Halfway" is a novel about people who wanted to love very much but couldn't because they were never taught how to. Anna and Georgiy got married out of desperation - simply because they needed to find someone eventually. But they never became close to each other - to the extent that Georgiy never even told his wife that he grew up in an orphanage. After the divorce, Anna suggested splitting the children: Anton stays with the father, and the younger daughter Yulka stays with the mother. No one thought about how the children would feel. Adults, scorched by their own pain, were unable to protect their children from pain. But, fortunately, children often turn out to be wiser than their parents.
