The book for the first time collected the earliest English cartoons with Russian theme. The publication covers the period of Russian history since the reign of Anna Ioannovna and until the end of the rule of Emperor Paul I. What are Catherine II and Paul I, Suvorov and Potemkin? Why were Russia depicted in the form of a bear? How did the Europeans react to the first accession of the Crimea to Russia? As political events, as well as stereotypes and phobias visualized in satirical graphics?
One-year half of the engravings reflect the main peripetics of Russia"s foreign policy of the XVIII century: seven-year-old and Russian-Swedish, as well as numerous Russian-Turkish wars, the accession of the Black Sea region, the Ochakovsky crisis, the redistribution of Poland, the anti-Manzu coalitions and the famous Italian Campania Suvorov. The authors in 38 chapters analyze in detail the historical, literary and visual contexts of British cartoons.
Earlier, the book "Bears, Cossacks and Russian Moroz", considering the image of Russia in the English caricature of Napoleonic wars and the next decades. In the aggregate, both volumes cover 100 years of Russian history. Most engravings are in the Collection of State Hermitage and are published for the first time. Both editions have no analogues in any country, nor abroad and addressed to both a wide audience and specialists, representatives of different academic disciplines.
