In the office, which in the middle of the 20th century was held by the Royal Ambassador of the Netherlands in Beijing Robert Van Gulik, the walls to the very ceiling were forced by books on the history of the ancient China. In conversations for a cup of green tea, Mr. Ambassador often complained to his friends that it was upset by how little Europeans know about the past of the Great Empires of the Far East. To somehow interest the countrymen-Dutch, Van Gulik decided to write a detective, the main character of which would be a chicken-Chinese. He could imagine that his novels about the judge di would become one of the most famous detective serials of the century!
