By a decree of Emperor Nicholas I, the Imperial Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum in 1843 was transferred from Tsarskoye Selo to St. Petersburg and renamed the Imperial Alexander Lyceum.
Over the 75 years of its existence, the Alexander Lyceum gave Russia a number of outstanding figures. Among them: chairmen of the Council of Ministers V.N. Kokovtsov and Prince. N.D. Golitsyn, Foreign Ministers: Prince. A.B. Lobanov-Rostovsky, A.I. Izvolsky, S. D. Sazonov, many other high-ranking officials and administrators, senators, diplomats, as well as writers (in particular, writer M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, poets V.D. Akhsharumov, S.S. Bekhov) , artists, composers, scientists (G.N. Verubov, Prince V.E. Lubomirsky), travelers (A.K. Bulatovich) and theologians (Archbishop John (Prince Shakhovskaya) and Archimandrite Kiprian (Kern)).
The dictionary proposed to readers is the most complete collection of biographies of persons related to the Alexander Lyceum today - not only graduating from the course, but also retired for various reasons who taught or served in it, starting in 1843. The total number of biographies is about 3000.
It seems that the dictionary will be useful to everyone who is interested in the history of the Alexander Lyceum and the fate of its pets, who honor the memory of this unique educational institution, as well as historians, genealogues and local historians
