Denis Diderot (1713–1784) was a French philosopher, writer, and playwright, the main inspirer of the famous 'Encyclopedia', which became one of the largest reference works of the 18th century. The novel 'Indiscreet Jewels' stands out among the author's other works. According to family tradition, Diderot took it up as a result of a bet with Madame de Puisieux, seeking to prove that there was nothing easier than writing in the 'scabrous-entertaining style of Crebillon the younger'. The narrative about a magical ring endowed with the power to elicit confessions from any woman, making her reveal her 'jewels' of love adventures, indeed refers to the popular genre of frivolous novels of that time, but by no means exhausts the content of the work. Scattered throughout its pages, witty mockery of the church, scholars, poets, and hypocrites allows Diderot to present a broad picture of the corrupted morals of 18th-century France. Thus, even an 'indecent' tale under the pen of a convinced enlightener becomes an expression of his philosophical-moralistic doctrine.
