Pavel Pavlovich Muratov was an outstanding Russian historian, a specialist in European and Asian art, an expert in icon painting, a literary and art critic, a publisher, translator, and publicist. He was a curator in the department of fine arts and classical antiquities at the Rumyantsev Museum, co-published the art journal "Sofia" with K.F. Nekrasov, and was an active figure in the art world before and after his emigration. He organized exhibitions and collaborated with many specialized newspapers and magazines. Pavel Muratov was also known as a writer, with some of his most famous works including the historical novel "Egeria" and, of course, the book of refined and observant essays "Images of Italy."
