This book can be read in different ways. First and foremost, it is the story of Joseph Jacotot, a French school teacher in exile, who in 1818 discovered a new teaching method - causing panic in the entire scientific community of Europe. Jacotot did not know Flemish, but found that he could teach in French to Flemish students who did not speak French. Thus, he concluded that knowledge itself is not necessary for teaching, and explanation is not a universal method of education. The results of this unusual pedagogical experiment led Jacotot to acknowledge that all people are equally intelligent. Based on this postulate, he developed the philosophy and method of 'intellectual emancipation', allowing illiterate parents, for example, to teach their children to read. The book is dedicated to describing and analyzing Jacotot's method, its influence on understanding the process of learning, and explains why, by freeing ourselves from the burden and hierarchy of intellect, we gain freedom and the opportunity to finally learn something new.
