The novel "Idiot" along with "Crime and Punishment", "The Adolescent", "The Possessed", and "The Brothers Karamazov" is part of the so-called "great pentateuch" by F.M. Dostoevsky. This novel became one of the writer's most beloved works, as Dostoevsky presents his moral and philosophical position in it. "Idiot" sets a difficult task - to describe the "new prophet" and present the reactions of those around him to the words and actions of such a seeker of truth. In his letters, Dostoevsky refers to the main character of his novel, Myshkin, as the "prince-Christ." In the Gospel of John, the Savior says that he is "not of this world," so in Dostoevsky's portrayal, Prince Myshkin is a person who does not fit well into the real world, a contemporary blessed one. In this regard, one can also recall Don Quixote by Cervantes, who is seen by those around him as a madman at best. At the same time, conversations with Myshkin remarkably reveal the hidden spiritual qualities of the characters in the novel. For example, Mark Krysovoy from Bulgakov's novel would certainly change after a conversation with Yeshua Ha-Notzri. However, Myshkin is unable to change the corrupt world around him and, by not accepting it, he ultimately goes mad. The novel "Idiot" began to be published in installments in the journal "Russky Vestnik" in 1868. The final chapters were written by Dostoevsky in 1869 in Florence. The work on the novel was difficult for him. Critics responded skeptically to this work, considering it detached from life. It was only in 1874 that "Idiot" was successfully published as a separate book. However, over time, the public's attitude towards the novel began to change, and at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, it had a noticeable influence on European culture. Friedrich Nietzsche and Stefan Zweig wrote about this novel. Later, "Idiot" was repeatedly adapted for the screen both in Russia and abroad.

The edition is adorned with illustrations by Olga Andreevna Rusakova. They effectively convey the complex inner world of the novel's characters. The future artist was born in St. Petersburg. After graduating from the design faculty of the Finnish University of Applied Sciences in Kymenlaakso, she interned at the Polytechnic University of Valencia in the Faculty of Fine Arts. Rusakova has participated in international competitions in illustration and wall art. She illustrated Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical novel "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" and Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" in the BML series. She also created illustrations for Marina Tsvetaeva's collection of poems "Evening Album" in the smaller format BML series.
