Maryse Condé is a French writer, the first to receive the New Academy Prize - an alternative to the Nobel Prize. Born in Guadeloupe, a journalist, and a professor at Columbia University, in her works she shows how colonialism changed the world and how its victims reclaimed their heritage. In France, the writer heads the Committee for the Memory of Slavery.
"I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem" is a historical novel dedicated to the resonant events of 1692 when nineteen people were condemned and executed during the witch hunt.
At the age of seven, Tituba witnessed a terrible event - the death of her own mother. Later, she was sold into slavery and sent to America, where she was accused of witchcraft.
Maryse Condé not only tells the story of a black woman's life, but also makes a powerful social statement: there is no place for racism and sexism in a healthy society.
