The name of the English writer Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) is rightfully inseparably linked with his famous novel 'The Moonstone', where he essentially acted as one of the founders of the detective genre, inventing plot twists that would later become traditional for detective novels. In the shadow of this loud achievement remained another aspect of Collins - a friend of Charles Dickens and a remarkable novelist-social commentator. 'Man and Wife', the ninth novel by Collins, was published in 1870. Not only a magnificent writer but also a lawyer by education, describing the intricacies of the relationships between Anne Sylvester, Blanche Lundie, Geoffrey Delamayn, and Arnold Brinkworth, Wilkie Collins creates a merciless description of his era, where, entering into marriage, the wife becomes a hostage to the norms imposed by law.
