Roman "humiliated and insulted" (1861) was created by F.M.Dostoevsky in the era of the extraordinary lift of Russian public life, - in the era, when the publication of a new literary work was perceived as an event socially significant. So it was perceived and the appearance of the novel "humiliated and offended". After his release, N. A. Dobrolyubov took Dostoevsky the most honorable place in the "Humanistic" direction of Russian literature. Much in this novel readers seemed unusual: before them was a new ethical and social problem - the problem of egoism. Prince Valkovsky, unfolding his cynic "philosophy of life on the pages of the novel, became the first in the work of the writer with a hero-"idiologist", the predecessor of a man from the underground, Skolnikova, Svidrigaylov and other Heroes of Dostoevsky 1860-1870s
