Nikolai Alexeyevich Ostrovsky (1904-1936) was a Soviet writer with a difficult fate - he lived only 32 years. However, he managed to accomplish a lot, including creating his famous novel-epic "How the Steel Was Tempered," which became the most published work of fiction in the USSR until 1986. This autobiographical work encompasses the entire tumultuous era of the Civil War and the early years of the Soviet regime.
The main conclusion of the writer is that the most valuable thing for a person is life. "It is given to him only once, and he must live it in such a way that there is no painful regret for the years lived aimlessly, no shame for a mean and petty past, so that, dying, he can say: all life and all strength were devoted to the most beautiful thing in the world - the struggle for the liberation of humanity."
