In this book, the famous Norwegian economist Eric Rainert shows that rich countries have become rich thanks to the combination of state intervention, protectionism and strategic investment, and not thanks to free trade. According to the author, it was such a policy that was the key to successful economic development, starting from Italy of the Renaissance to today"s countries of Southeast Asia. Showing that modern economists ignore this approach, insisting on the importance of free trade, Rainert explains this by a long-standing split in economic science between the continental-European tradition, focused on a comprehensive state policy, on the one hand, and the Anglo-American, oriented to free trade, - with another.
