In his novel, which ends the "California Triptih", Robinson again transfers us in the middle of the 21st century. The book is not a literal continuation of the two previous novels. The entire trilogy is different alternative versions of one world. The "District shore" depicted a society that survived a nuclear holocaust. The Golden Coast reflected the crisis of the era of the arms race and uncontrolled technological progress. “At the Ocean’s edge” is devoted to environmental and social utopia, created by limiting the population, closing multinational corporations, the ban on war and the rational use of renewable resources. Kevin, a young architect and builder, who grew up in this “green” world, is involved in a conflict with Alfredo, mayor of El Modena, who wants to build a medical center in the reserved and idyllic territory. Behind the mayor are the faceless forces of the remnants of corporations. The lawyer Oscar and grandfather Kevin - Tom Barnard, a former dissident and one of the creators of the new public system will join the struggle
