Shirley Jackson was called the only practitioner among modern writers. And in fact, from her stories it blows some kind of “drawing”: in the labyrinths of the plots, absurdity and mystery are bizarrely mixed, creating nothing like a “somnambulic” atmosphere, where it is difficult to distinguish reality from fiction. From the first page, there is also the feeling that evil is very close - according to Jackson, it lurks in the souls of people who mired in prejudices and cruelty. The most clearly a premonition of horror is manifested in the title story, the “lottery”, which became the classic of the American short story of the twentieth century and was filmed three times
