The story of a Kazakh family over the course of a century. Decossackization, war, the tumultuous 1990s, personal losses, and small victories - through the eyes of three generations of women. The eldest of them, Akbalzhan, was married off at sixteen to save her from starvation. What made her run away into the unknown with two young children? Will she find love and happiness?
