The book of Marina Mogilner considers unique material about the formation of a “non -classical” science of a person (his types, races, bodily structure and collective features) in the second half of the 19th and first third of the XX century. The activities of the Russian Anthropological Society, the history of the founding of the relevant departments at universities, ideological borrowings from the "colonial" anthropology and geography, hot discussions about racial affiliation and "Russian" nature of Pushkin, etc. They are analyzed by the author against the background of disputes about the ethnographic diversity and integrity of the empire, as well as in the process of adaptation of anthropology to Soviet conditions
