Varvara Stepanova was born in Kaunas. She studied at the Kazan art school, where in 1914 she met Alexander Rodchenko, her future husband and associate. Without graduating from schools, she moved to Moscow. The first post-revolutionary years, the artist created illustrations for books by Russian futurist poets. In the 20-30s, she was an art editor of magazines such as "Kinopot", "Lef", "New Lef", "Soviet Cinema", "Modern Architecture", "Change", worked on the design of performances and costumes in the theater in the theater .
