The role of the Thessalonian brothers Constantine-Cyril and Methodius in the enlightenment of the Slavic peoples primarily lies in the fact that through their efforts, they laid a solid foundation for the then-emerging and newly literate culture of the Slavic world. The creation of the alphabet by Saint Cyril and, most importantly, the translation of sacred books into Old Church Slavonic, which has since become the literary language, led to the emergence of a centuries-old cultural and spiritual tradition in Eastern Europe. The new literacy continues to be an integral part of the lives of most Slavic peoples, thanks to which they have learned to express ideas, thoughts, and feelings in accordance with their character.
