Hittitology is the science of the Hittites, their history, culture, and language, and it offers particularly favorable opportunities for studying the connections between the history of language and the history of culture, as the Hittite language is known from a large number of diverse monuments in terms of genre, allowing for a fairly comprehensive understanding of Hittite culture. This is of special significance because the Hittite language is one of the oldest cultural languages of the Ancient Near East. Hittite culture played a mediating role between the civilizations of the Near East and Greece, which is reflected in linguistic facts. The ethnic and cultural connections of the Hittites with other peoples influenced the lexicon of the Hittite language, which contains a number of borrowings from other languages of the Ancient Near East. The Hittite language provides rich material for studying questions of language mixing and the formation of linguistic unions.
