Chestmir Loukotka set out to answer the most important questions related to writing: what it was like at the moment of its appearance and what role religious magic played in its development, what and how it was written on, and how this influenced the evolution of writing, how different signs are read and deciphered, why some types of writing have survived to the present day while others have been forgotten, how different writing systems interact, and so on. Emerging in primitive forms for the transmission of basic information, then progressing from pictograms to hieroglyphs, later to syllabic and finally alphabetic variants, writing gradually gave people the ability to express complex concepts, and now we can say that without written signs, there would be no civilization - at least not the one we live in today. The text of the book is adapted to modern achievements in paleography and epigraphy. Chestmir Loukotka (1895-1966) was a Czech linguist, anthropologist, and historian. He was elected a member of the French Academy for his scientific achievements.
