The British scientist, employee of the diplomatic service, politician and businessman, William Edward David Allen conducted a thorough geopolitical analysis of the Ukrainian region from Kievan Rus to the outbreak of World War II. The development of Ukraine and its controversial boundaries can be understood only when considering relations between it and Lithuania, Poland, Austria-Hungary, the Scandinavian countries, the Ottoman Empire, the Mongol khanates in the Crimea, Cossacks and the Hetmans and, of course, tsarist Russia, and later between Germany and between Germany and between Germany and Soviet Union. Allen’s story is interesting in terms of the national question that torments multinational empires, including all neighboring states of Ukraine of the past and present, and which is still the cause of tension in Ukraine
