In 1478, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile established an organization that went down in history as the Spanish Inquisition. The fundamental difference between the Spanish Inquisition and similar institutions of the Catholic Church operating throughout Europe was that it prioritized the interests of the royal authority above all else, sometimes conflicting with the Roman popes for these interests. Spanish inquisitors paid little attention to persecuting witches, but they did not hesitate to engage in political espionage and cruelly punished anyone who hindered the achievement of Spain's state and religious unity - primarily Muslims, Jews, and Lutherans. Thousands of people were forcibly converted to Christianity by them, and then punished for not being zealous enough Christians. In his famous work, Samuel Lozinsky describes in detail the existence of the Spanish Inquisition - from its establishment to its abolition in the first quarter of the 19th century. The book, first published in 1914, is now available in modern Russian orthography.
