The three-volume 'History of the Body', written by French, British, and American anthropologists and cultural historians, thoroughly examines bodily practices and representations of the body in Europe - from the Renaissance to the present day. The second volume is dedicated to the period from the French Revolution to the beginning of World War I: the 'long 19th century', which brought numerous innovations that fundamentally changed the perception of the body. Medical discoveries and achievements in art, the emerging field of sexology, rapid development of sports, technological progress, and moral reflections on pleasure and pain - in all these areas, attitudes towards the body undergo serious changes. This foreshadows even deeper transformations that will occur in the 20th century.
