The second volume of the History of Russian Art (hereinafter referred to as HRA), like the previous one, is divided chronologically into two parts. One of them covers the period from the second quarter of the 12th century to around the 1160s, while the other is dedicated to the art of the second half - the end of the 12th century. In the political and spiritual life of Ancient Rus, these were two different epochs, each with its own characteristics reflected in all spheres of culture and art, which determined the authors' proposed methods of examining monuments and the structure of the texts. Both the first and second parts have sections dedicated to architecture, painting, and monumental sculpture, but due to the specific nature of the material, they are presented differently. This is primarily related to architecture and sculpture. The determining factor here is the principle of examining monuments by regions. In the sections dedicated to painting, a more traditional principle of comparative analysis of the works is mainly preserved, allowing for the identification of trends in the formation of iconographic themes and programs, common patterns in the development of stylistics that were prevalent in the pre-Mongol period throughout the territory of Rus and even beyond - in all Eastern Christian countries.
