The creation of the History of Russia from ancient times was the main thing of the life of the famous historian S. M. Solovyov. Solovyov is the first of the Russian historians (together with Cavelin, who at the same time expressing the same thought) comprehended our entire past, uniting individual moments and events with one common connection. For him, there are no more or less interesting or important eras: everyone has the same interest and importance as inextricable links of one great chain. Solovyov indicated in which direction the work of the Russian historian should go at all, set the starting points in the study of our past. He was the first to express a real theory in the application to Russian history, introducing the principle of development, the gradual change of mental and moral concepts and the gradual growth of the people"s - and this is one of the most important merits of Solovyov
